Soil Blending – a green-friendly remediation method.


An effective treatment at the source, soil blending delivers chemical oxidants, reductants, bio-amendments, and stabilizers into soils to breakdown hydrocarbons. It allows treatment of low permeability soils.

It is a green-friendly, lower cost alternative to hazardous waste landfilling. Additionally, it’s a quick remediation option that uses in-situ or ex-situ methods.

In-situ soil blending

This method is in-situ, meaning in-place, and utilizes conventional excavators with or without blending attachments or specialized auger driven equipment. Oxidants and/or amendments are mixed directly into unsaturated and saturated soils. One advantage is that it treats both soil and groundwater simultaneously.

Modified in-situ soil blending

A low-cost approach is to utilize a modified LDA bucket auger rig. Soils are removed and segregated for ex-situ treatment in a tub/roll-off using chemical oxidants, reductants, or bio-amendments. Then, soil can be returned to the borehole with chemical additives to stimulate long term bioremediation in groundwater.

Ex-situ soil blending

Soil is excavated utilizing a pug mill or similar equipment for chemical treatment prior to returning soils to the excavation. Soils are removed and segregated for ex-situ treatment in a tub/rolloff using chemical oxidants, reductants, or bio-amendments. Typically, ex-situ methods offer maximum contact compared to in-situ methods. Some benefits to the ex-situ method are that soils can be stabilized after treatment for re-use and lower treatment thresholds can be achieved.

This method is “green-friendly” because it promotes recycling versus dig-and-haul and off-site hazardous waste landfilling.
